NBA 2k11 Association update: Luol Deng-Josh Smith swap

After struggling out of the gate with a 1-3 record in the 2010-2011 NBA season, the Chicago Bulls have traded Luol Deng (SF), Taj Gibson (PF), and a 2012 1st round pick in return for Atlanta Hawk's Josh Smith (SF/PF) along with a 2011 2nd round draft pick. Deng, who has been struggling mightily and averaging just under 10 points a game under Tom Thibodeau's offense, should get more of an opportunity playing alongside with all-star Joe Johnson. It was a tough decision to give away the city favorite Taj Gibson in the deal but it was told that it had to be done to complete this blockbuster trade. In getting Gibson, the Hawks get a front line man who can defend the post very well with an ever improving offensive game. He is expected to start at the 4 alongside Al Horford and this youthful front-court should be a dynamic combination for years to come for the Hawks. The Bulls get a hybrid forward in Josh Smith who has had career numbers last season across the board in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. Smith provides the Bulls an inconsistent offensive player but a boost in athleticism and overall production at the three. Although Keith Bogans has been starting at the two guard position from the beginning of the season, the addition of Smith probably means bringing in Kyle Korver at the two guard position to complement Smith's inability to create for himself or make jumpshots. A starting lineup of Rose, Korver, Smith, Boozer, and Noah should give this starting five a much more balanced offensive and defensive game, something lacking before the trade. It is too early to tell which team will benefit the most but this ultimately depends on how Gibson develops as a full time starter down the road. Josh Smith is still fairly young at age 25 so the Bulls should also be getting a forward who can contribute for this team for a long time. Only time will tell if Smith was a vital addition to this up and coming Bulls team.
